This weekend sees the much anticipated return of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, celebrating a prolific 100 years of showcasing the best in horticulture and in turn inspiring a huge number of Fuchsia fanatics, Lobelia lovers, Anemone admirers and topiary tamers.

First arriving on the scene in 1913, the Chelsea Flower Show has blossomed into, what the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, called “"the Mount Olympus of horticulture… the world's most famous flower show".

Forever an ongoing source of fragrant inspiration, horticulture appears in an array of beautiful images from surface print designers, photographers and artists. Drawing inspiration from the study of botany and horticulture, flowers remain a constant feature throughout many great artworks. Here's a few floral designs we're lusting after this summer.

    The Botanist:

Wallpapered - Durer - 8 Studies of Wild FlowersWidely regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance, Albrecht Durer painted this beautiful study - Eight Studies of Wild Flowers as a way of examining the beauty of wild florals. Vivid in colour and delicately considered in style, this stunning wall mural would make a perfect choice for a living space.

Wallpapered - Timothy Easton - Irises: Blue, Yellow and GoldThe natural craving to study the beauty of florals has never ceased and nearly 5 centuries after Durers explorations, Timothy Easton presented us with his stunning depiction of Irises in pink, blue and gold. Filled with the freshness of spring, his painting of the beautiful bloom exudes light and colour. Place it on your feature wall in the bedroom or living space for the greatest effect.

    Herb Harvest:

Wallpapered - Elizabeth Olwen - Herb Garden wallpaper designThere's nothing quite like the taste of home grown herbs! Whether they're fresh from a flower bed or plucked from a pot on your window sill, cooking with your own herbs is not only easy, but incredibly satisfying. Deep in the rich colour of Oregano and playful in its use of classical herb illustrations, this print from Elizabeth Olwen, 'Herb Garden', will be sure to satisfy any herb lovers out there! Place it in your dining space or kitchen for a fantastic foliage feature wall.

    Contemporary Florals:

  • Illustrative wallpapers from Yenty Jap

    Yenty Jap Logo

Located in Adelaide, Australia, Yenty Jap has a brilliantly unique design philosophy; she believes that designing and illustrating enables the elements of fantasy and reality to be united. This philosophy and her in depth exploration into beautiful bold colours are more than evident in her playfully illustrative collection for Wallpapered.

Wallpapered- Yenty Jap- Autumn DayPlayful display of colour and illustration in the beautiful Autumn Day wallpaper design by Yenty Jap

Creating illustrative prints on a larger scale has always been a natural impulse for Yenty. When we asked what made her want to begin designing wallpaper, she told us "I actually always imagined myself painting a wall mural; a big Christmas tree with all the ornaments and elves coming out holding a magic lantern, ready to grant every wish of the passer by". This ability to imagine fantastic whimsical scenes truly characterises her work.

Animals and Nature are a main source of inspiration in Yenty's collection. Visiting libraries for their rich sources of information and imagery, she will often flip through books until she finds something unique and beautiful which she can elaborate on in her designs. Once her inspiration is sourced, Yenty will spend hours creating clean line tattoo style illustrations or her cute character designs, getting lost in the process of exploring and creating and not tiring until the design is complete.

Wallpapered_Yenty Jap_Flower head FamilyCute playful characters make this Flower Head Family wall mural design perfect for the kids bedroom or playroom

This therapeutic process of designing and creating is a big factor in her design style. She told us, "I love the fact that I keep developing my style and it is an adventure of finding that treasure; looking at an artwork and keep on loving it."

"I admire the work by Hayao Miyazaki and Norman Rockwell. I have a bucket list that I want to accomplish in my life. Some points on the list are to have a garden full with giant sun flowers and, of course, to paint wall mural. I suddenly remember I work digitally now; maybe it is time to pick up the brush again!".

  • Love Chic Living's Jen Stanbrook on why she loves wallpaper

If you owned a home in the 90’s, and liked a little bit of DIY it was very hard to miss Changing Rooms on the TV. With interior designers such as Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and Linda Barker, we embraced colour and MDF. In fact, if you couldn’t make it out of MDF at the time, it wasn’t worth having.

Programmes like this showed people that they could be their own interior designers. It showed us that we could experiment with colour and pattern and it made home design accessible to many people. The downside to Changing Rooms was that the focus was mostly on paint, and not on Wallpaper. It wasn’t until some years later that we started to see the resurgence in popularity of wallpaper, and now even programmes such as ’60 Minute Makeover’ do embrace wallpaper and wall murals, showing that using it can be achieved even if time is restricted.

Many of us are fearful of Wallpaper. Afraid of its complexity and the difficulty associated with hanging it. We think of traditional blown vinyl and old fashioned textured paper that stuck to the wall for years and never came away. But wallpaper designs and trends have changed immensely and the variety and choice on offer is now amazing.

I love the impact Wallpaper can have on a decorating scheme. It can give it life and definition where using paint simply cannot. I love that we can be bold or subtle in our wallpaper choices, and that we can add as little or as much into a room as we like.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to wake up every day and see this feature wall mural in your bedroom staring back at you? Or how about some children's wallpaper? Clever Cats by Anne Scott combines colour and playfulness without being predictable in her cartoon style prints.

Different and striking wall murals make for a talking point in the home that you will love, like me, for years to come. Don’t be afraid of wallpaper. Embrace it and give it a go. If it really doesn’t work you can try again but once you’ve gone there, you won’t want to go back.

Love Chic Living's Jen Stanbrook has insatiable love of home interiors and design. Her interiors inspiration blog was nominated for Best Home Blog in the MADs National Parenting Awards 2012. She writes a weekly Wallpaper Wednesdays feature which we love.
